“A Night Out Against Gentrification”
Defend the Iberville Community! Yes to Affordable Housing! No to Racist Economic Cleansing in New Orleans!
Thursday, April 7 5 PM till? 1201 Canal St. (@ Basin St) old Krause Department Store
As part of what the rich call a “comeback” on Canal St., city hall and their corporate backers are conspiring to drive out working class people, especially African American workers, from the area. The clearest example of this racist agenda is the ongoing back room deals to remove the African American working class Iberville public housing community. Across the New Orleans area families are being forced to double up--or go homeless--due to the massive demolition of public housing. The response of City hall and the George Bush controlled New Orleans housing authority is to deepen the crisis by demolishing the Iberville so the rich can “comfortably” get to their $800,000 penthouses at the new “1201 Canal Condominiums” without having to pass by the “unsightly” Iberville development. We don’t want people forced into “Kabacoffvilles” and “Khouryvilles” in order to make the rich feel comfortable. We say “Hands off Iberville!”. We demand ALL the 858 public housing apartments at Iberville be preserved. We demand millions of dollars to fix-up apartments to meet the needs of the existing residents, instead of millions for war or penthouses for the rich. Come to the “night out against gentrification” to show your support for defending Iberville and against racist white-collar crimes of gentrification.
