* Food * Music * Douglass High School Student Poetry Jam and Digital Media Presentations* Celebrate Unity in the Community and New Orleans Civil Rights History

Background: In 1892, Homer Plessy and the New Orleans Citizens’ Committee challenged segregation on New Orleans streetcars. Plessy was ultimately arrested, tried and convicted for sitting in the white section of the car. Plessy’s case led to the 1896 landmark decision in Plessy v. Ferguson in which the U.S. Supreme Court declared that black citizens could legally be subjected to “separate but equal” accommodations. As we know, separate was always unequal – particularly in the schools. It was not until 1954 – over half a century later – that the Supreme Court acknowledged this in Brown v. Board of Education. Today, New Orleans schools are some of the worst in the country and serve a population of children that is 95 percent black. In honor of the struggles of New Orleans civil rights activists and the children of our city, we would like to see Plessy Park turned into a Civil Rights Memorial and that our city make quality education a reality in all our schools.
