n Wednesday, September 17 at 6:30 p.m., a panel discussion and community forum will reunite key figures in the 1970 Black Panther standoff in the Desire Housing Development. Former Mayor Moon Landrieu, former Panthers Malik Rahim and Althea Francois, Civil Rights lawyer Ernest Jones and others will talk about how the city avoided a violent showdown between panthers and police. They will also how different elements can come together again today to solve the problems that caused the Panthers to organize here in the first place. The free forum will be held at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. The dynamic evening will include a brief historical reenactment of the standoff, a question and answer session with audience members, an exhibition of media coverage from 1970 and a community meal of red beans and rice. A booklet of interviews by Louisiana Weekly columnist Orissa Arend with participants in the standoff will be available for a $5 contribution.
