DESCRIPTION:
The Right Of Right Return Demands Public Housing In N.O.!
Join The Martin Luther King Day March To Rebuild The Gulf Coast And The World.

On January 16, 2006 the annual Martin Luther King Day March in New Orleans, despite the best efforts of Mayor Nagin and the local corporate elite to kill it with neglect, will be held in New Orleans. This will be the first national call to action in the Gulf Coast region since Katrina to explicitly demand that public housing in New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast region be reopened and rebuilt. We recognize that talk of a Right to Return to the hurricane devastated region is a cruel joke without the reopening and rebuilding of public housing in the region. New Orleans alone contained 8,330 public housing units on the eve of Katrina's landing. Sadly, thousands of habitable public housing units in the region remain closed because of the silent but very real campaign by the Bush Administration and local elites to elminate housing for the poor. It's time for progressives around the country to stand with the tens of thousands of working class and African-American residents of the Gulf Coast region who call public housing and Section 8 apartments home.

Where: New Orleans, Louisiana.
On the corner of Caffin & Claiborne
in the Lower Ninth Ward.
This is where the MLK March in N.O.
has traditionally begun.
When: 11 am January 16, 2006.

March In New Orleans MLK Day Behind These Demand

*Reopen and restore public housing in the Gulf Coast
to its 1995 levels.
*Impose a three year moratorium on all evictions and home
foreclosures in the hurricane devastated region.
*Tax the oil companies $1 for every $1 price increase in oil
since the run up to the Iraq war. This revenue, among other
things, will finance a democratically controlled public works
program to rebuild the Gulf Coast region-infrastructure,
schools, hospitals and housing-at union wages.
*The immediate withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq.

Sponsors and endorsers include: C3/Hands Off Iberville, the Forest Park Tenants Association, CAWI(Baton Rouge), NOHEAT, Harlem Tenants Union, Workers Democracy Network, Campus Antiwar Network (CAN)

Those who wish to endorse the action or seek additional information can send emails to howellsfreedom@aol.com or call (504) 587-0080
