MarketUmbrella.org and New Orleans Food and Farm Network are putting together a series of neighborhood maps that will show where food is available in your area.
The purpose of these maps is: • To show residents in a 20 to 30-block radius where food is available, whether it is at grocery store, an open-air market, restaurants, or emergency kitchens. • Gather information that will be shared with decision makers about “food deserts”- in other words, areas in which no fresh foods are available. • Create a base for a more in depth food map that will be available later- one that outlines food access, food history and food facts for the city of New Orleans. These neighborhood maps will be updated and posted regularly. We will post the finished maps in public areas, online, with neighborhood and grassroots organizations and with city and state officials. The Food Mapping Project will hold its first volunteer meeting on Wednesday, February 22 at 8:15 pm at 3133 Ponce de Leon -Fair Grinds. The coffeehouse has not reopened, but has space upstaiirs where we will be meeting. Please call 504-363-1105 or email gmapnola@yahoo.com to suggest a site, to offer your business or organization as a place to leave maps or to ask about volunteering.
