FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- This Saturday, May 12, Barracks Street Cafe (420 Barracks St.) will be joining organizations and individuals around the globe to celebrate World Fair Trade Day. Cherry Crochet, owner of the cafe, recently committed to sell only organic Fair Trade coffee. She orders directly from the distributor Cafe Campesino Fair Trade Organic Coffees, which is located in Georgia. Geoffrey Hennies, an eight-year veteran of the fair trade movement and outreach coordinator for Cafe Campesino, will be tabling on Saturday May 12 in front of Barracks Street Cafe, giving away Conscious Consumer Fair Trade guides and the book Cafesito Story. Barracks Street Cafe and Hennies are collaborating to bring public attention to the necessity of fair trade practices in today's global economy. “Fair trade is a different model of doing business, whereby we connect the consumer and the producer,” Hennies says. “It's about building relationships.” With only one fair trade cafe, New Orleans has the potential to provide far more fair trade coffee, thereby supporting coffee farmers with a living wage and promoting sustainable organic farming practices that produce great tasting coffee. This year’s theme for World Fair Trade Day is “Kids Need Fair Trade,” offering opportunities for us to learn how fair trade improves the lives of children in producer countries – and for our children to participate in fair trade. World Fair Trade Day is an international celebration of Fair Trade internationally, with events organized worldwide. On and around the second Saturday of May every year, IFAT member organizations based in 70 countries, along with Fair Trade shops and networks, host events including Fair Trade breakfasts, talks, music concerts, fashion shows and much more, to promote Fair Trade and campaign for justice in trade. Fair Trade products from marginalized communities in the majority world, including coffee and tea, clothes, jewelry and beautiful handicrafts will be showcased on this day. Many events continue throughout the month of May.
World Fair Trade Day started as a European movement of over 2,000 World Shops (Fair Trade shops), working together through NEWS! Movements to celebrate the same day and campaign for Fair Trade in Japan and the US joined them. "World Fair Trade Day" was initiated by Safia Minney, founder of People Tree, and adopted by IFAT and its members at the 2001 Full Meeting, to promote stronger global awareness of Fair Trade, and this day has been raising its profile ever since.
