Hurricane season is here but hurricane protection, in the form of the Lafitte and other solid, brick constructed, Housing Developments, is NOT! With the start of the 2007 Hurricane Season, the reopening of public housing is more important than ever. The "bricks" have withstood several major hurricanes since their construction in the 1940s. They are safer than most of the private housing stock, and certainly safer than dangerous, tin-can, FEMA trailers.
Local and state leaders, by their silence, have supported HANO and HUD’s criminal policy, and clear human rights violation, of keeping public housing closed. They--especially SENATOR MARY LANDRIEU-- even refuse to support a bill in the Senate--HR 1227--that would finance the reopening of public housing, bring our people home and provide protection for all New Orleanians. Come out June 1st and send them a message!
