The Lessons of Saint Thomas and the Battle to Reopen to Reopen Public Housing in Post-Katrina N.O.
The “redevelopment” of the St. Thomas Public Housing Development of New Orleans did more than just destroy a working class African-American neighborhood in a rapidly gentrifying area of the city center. The process that resulted in the transformation of St. Thomas into River Gardens provides developers and allied politicians with master blue print to guide the current offensive to destroy all “traditional” public housing in post-Katrina New Orleans. Recently a Tulane doctoral student and local housing activist, Jay Arena, completed the first ever dissertation that focuses on the HOPE VI experience of the St. Thomas Development. On Thursday June 14, 2007 Dr. Arena will critique the St. Thomas experience with an emphasis on pinpointing lessons from the history of this tragic recent historical event that will help aid residents and supporters in the ongoing struggle to reopen public housing in New Orleans. All persons who have an interest in the fate of affordable housing locally would do well to attend this meeting.
Issues That This Discussion Will Address Include:
Who were the main forces behind the drive to HOPE VI St. Thomas?
What role did the non-profits servicing St. Thomas play in the privatization of the housing development?
What role did the residents council of St. Thomas play in the privatization of the housing development?
How did “redevelopment” impact the residents of St. Thomas?
What insights does the St. Thomas experience provide people now fighting to promote affordable housing in post-Katrina New Orleans.
