For anyone interested in being a part of the planning for the upcoming New Orleans benefit for the Jena Six, please come to a meeting This Thursday , 4:30pm, at 3500 Canal Street.
The Jena Six are six Black youth from Jena Louisiana facing life in prison for a schoolyard fight. The fight was initiated by white students, who hung three nooses in a tree at the high school courtyard, to warn black students not to sit there. After this hate crime was dismissed as a harmless prank by the school administration, black students protested under the tree. The LaSalle Parish District Attorney has refused to back down in prosecuting these young men, or to admit that hanging nooses is a hate crime.
The purpose of this benefit is to raise money to support the families in their legal struggle, and also build direct relationships between New Orleans supporters and the families.
This meeting is to plan not only a benefit for the families, but also any other activities for the families while they are in New Orleans, such as meeting with local organizations.
