Algiers is celebrating the History, Culture, Traditions and Contributions of African descents that arrived here on slave ships sailing across the ocean to their final destination, over the river to the Negro Slave Camps on the King’s Plantation in Algiers ~ The oldest Historic African neighborhood in our city.
The Africans were forced here in the early 1700’s and we never left. Our history involved unions with Indians, runaways, free people of color and Haitian immigrants that set up maroon camps in the Cut Off (lower coast Algiers) and many diverse traditions coming together to form the rich culture that we enjoy and share today.
Come to the River to inspire your soul!
