Being homeless in New Orleans for Mardi Gras is no holiday. THE HOMELESS OF NEW ORLEANS NEED HOUSING, NOT THREATS OR EMPTY PROMISES!
At a recent meeting of the Housing Committee of the City Council of New Orleans City Cynthia Hedge Morrell expressed concern that the homeless encampment on Canal and Claiborne under the I-10 overpass might still be in existence come Mardi Gras. The sordid record of councilmember Morrell regarding the issue of affordable housing strongly suggests that what troubles her most about the shantytown at the I-10 overpass is that it might disturb Mardi Gras revelers. This is the same councilmember who supports the demolition of 4,600 local public housing apartments and the imposition of a moratorium on the opening of private, multifamily apartment complexes in New Orleans East.
Join homeless people, displaced public housing residents and other supporters of affordable housing brought together by the demand that the government of this devastated community show at least as much concern for the plight of the city’s homeless and displaced as it does for the celebration of Mardi Gras.
Housing is a human right! Stop the political scapegoating of the New Orleans homeless! Stop the demolition of public housing! Housing vouchers for all who need them, now!
