Dear Friends Families and Allies
STAND and Gustav Evacuees are holding a press conference Monday September 15 @ 11am to expose Governor Jindal's differential treatment policy that led thousand of Evacuees into an unconceivable public health disaster and demoralizing treatment. According to the policy, which was release on the third anniversary of Katrina, those evacuating by bus --- the poorest evacuees -- would be taken to the worst shelters: abandoned and decaying Wal-Mart buildings that fail all humane standards. Evacuees tell stories about being treated like animals. "We are not asking for silver and gold, we are asking to be treated like human" said Dimetra. We will deliver residents' petition with over 1400 evacuees' signature who said "NEVER AGAIN."
We gather to release a public report on state shelters' treatments and conditions, and ask our city leaders to send a clear message that Governor Jindal must revoke his shelter policy.

STAND is a grassroots group of elders, farmers, skilled workers, and fathers who formerly or are experiencing homelessness in New Orleans. STAND arises from the tent cities and overcrowded shelters in New Orleans; when 7 people, frustrated with broken solutions, began to meet and saw the most viable solution was within us. As a project of the New Orleans Workers' Center for Racial Justice, we aim to create affordable housing and safe public spaces for the displaced families and communities. STAND believes unity and self-determination are the most viable solution for devastated communities in New Orleans.
Solidarity in the Struggle!!!
