A panel and public discussion will be held on “The Urgent Need for Federal Public Works for Metro New Orleans” at Loyola University on November 18, at 7:30 pm in the Audubon Room upstairs in Danna Hall student center (near Calhoun at Cromwell Streets).
Among the panelists will be Dr. Martin Rowland, environmental engineer, presenting the overall economic significance and opportunity of the current crash for meeting public infrastructure needs coupled with local employment, training, and economic sustainability. Other panelists will include Michelle Perez, conducting doctoral research on local education, speaking on the need for rehabilitated public school facilities; Roderick Dean, a community activist for reducing local violence, on the role of public works in mitigating poverty and neglect; Samuel Jackson, national housing activist, on public works for public housing. Also speaking will be Derrick Morrison, working on local unmet health care needs, on the immediate crisis in public health, and Elizabeth Cook, a local housing activist, on the important role of community organizing in pushing for, setting up, and keeping track of any public works program. The public is invited to raise questions and make comments.
The panel is sponsored by LUCAP—the Loyola University Community Action Program, C3—a local peace and justice organizations, and Mayday/NOLA—a New Orleans housing rights group.
