DESCRIPTION:
Rebuild Lafitte, don’t destroy what’s left of it!
PUBLIC WORKS, PUBLIC HOUSING & OBAMA’S STIMULUS PACKAGE.
In the midst of America’s worst financial crisis since the Great Depression President-elect Obama has pledged his administration to pursue a national public works program designed to produce and protect millions of jobs. The most important question for the people of the New Orleans area is what impact will this program have on jobs, public services and overall quality of life here. The so-called official recovery after Katrina teaches us that the great challenge facing New Orleans will be to ensure that federal assistance allocated for the national public works program reaches the people.
The goals of the January 8 Planning Meeting are to build opposition to the demolition of the Lafitte development’s apartments and to flesh out the demand that Obama’s public works program concretely address the city’s affordable housing needs. These demands will be forwarded by the people, not the politicians, to key federal legislators before Congress reconvenes.

WHAT DO WE WANT?
Renovate and preserve existing public housing, including
those apartments at the Lafitte Development?
One for one replacement of all public housing?
Hire public housing residents to rebuild public housing?
And what else?

PLANNING MEETING FOR PUBLIC WORKS
