World Premiere of local youth-directed documentary on the Treme and 7th Ward
New Orleans, LA- The Awesome Girls may be young, but they'll be giving the directors of HBO's "Treme" a run for their money this weekend.
On Friday, May 8th, New Orleans Video Voices in partnership with The Awesome Girls Mentoring Program will hold a world premiere of their film "From Our Point of View: Joining Hands to Save Our Community" at 7 p.m. at St. Anna's Espiscopal Church, 1313 Esplanade Ave.
The Awesome Girls are a group of girls aged 9-19 who participate in a year-round free mentoring program at St. Anna's. Since January, they've teamed up with New Orleans Video Voices to learn documentary filmmaking techniques.
Starting with each other, they've interviewed kids, adults, professionals, musicians, and parents about issues and life in the Treme and 7th Ward neighborhoods.
Featured interviews include Paul Vallas, Superintendent of the Recovery School District, Al Harris of St. Augustine Church, and Rev. Joyce Jackson of St. Anna's Episcopal.
The film, which is 30 minutes long, will be followed by a community discussion and filmmaker Q&A.
The screening is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Michele@NewOrleansVideoVoices.org or 504-931-6454
Donations may be made to support the Awesome Girls and New Orleans Video Voices.
