N.O. needs jobs, housing, schools & healthcare, not war. RALLY FOR PEACE THROUGH JUSTICE AT HOME AND ABROAD!
Just a few years after the architects of the official hurricane recovery effectively dismantled local public services the twin scourges of recession and war now menace New Orleanians. Orleans Parish unemployment jumped from 4.4% in March 2008 to 7.3% in March 2009. HUD has demolished 4,000 units of local public housing since December 2007. Governor Jindal is pursuing the closure of NOAH’s children hospital and mass layoffs at University Hospital. “Public education” in post-Katrina N.O. continues to degenerate into a monstrosity ever more hostile to poor children and union friendly workers. Meanwhile President Obama is asking Congress to provide him with $89 billion to continue the U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Averting what shows all the signs of another catastrophe in the making requires that people here take to the streets to demand that human need is put ahead of corporate greed.
