DESCRIPTION:

Women's Equality Day, August 26th, marks the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted full voting rights for women in 1920.
With the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, 2009 marks another historic moment for women across the country. Our administration recognized that gender discrimination in the workplace continues to be a huge issue--nationally, women earn about 77 cents to every dollar that their male counterparts earn.
In Louisiana the earnings ratio is much worse: women earn about 65 cents to every dollar that their male counterparts earn.
Pay discrimination, access to services and opportunities, workforce and financial issues all fall under the larger issue of how we, as women, break out of traditional gender roles, redefine our place in the community and assert our rights.
Join us on August 26th for a frank discussion on the issues facing women in Louisiana.
Moderator: Councilwoman Cynthia Willard Lewis
