Attention HANO and HUD: RESIDENTS OF THE C.J.PEETE AREA NEED MORE SECTION 3 JOBS, NOT MORE EXCUSES!
Section 3 of the Fair Housing Act mandates that 30% of all new hires for HUD funded neighborhood redevelopment be low income and public housing residents from the affected area. Unfortunately, low income residents from the C.J. Peete area constitute only a tiny minority of the neighborhoods redevelopment workforce. Hundreds of low-income residents from the Peete area have applied for redevelopment jobs only to be denied employment. Why? Because HUD funded contractors find it easier to deny workers the wages and benefits entitled to them if those employees are out of towners. It is particularly galling that HUD funded contractors have virtually shut the door on hiring young people from the Peete area, including youth who have completed training programs. *We demand that HUD funded contractors set aside at least 30% of the redevelopment jobs at PEETE for low income residents from the area.*
