DESCRIPTION:

The LSU/VA forces have made considerable headway in snapping up properties in upper Lower Mid City. Renters and homeowners have struck and are striking deals with the land-acquisition contractors. However, the struggle for public healthcare is far from over. The struggle to reopen the Rev. Avery C. Alexander Charity Hospital is not only not over, but June 22 presents a great opportunity for the pro-Charity forces to reach out to thousands of people. The City Planning Commission meets June 22, 1:30pm, in the City Council Chamber. As with all meetings in the Chamber, it will be televised over the govt access channel. And furthermore, the LSU administrative officials will be in the docket, asking the CPC for approval to begin demolition in the lower half of Lower Mid City--south or below S. Galvez. The CPC meeting does not come without restrictions on public participation, but because thousands will watch the broadcast and rebroadcast, it behooves the pro-Charity forces to take advantage of the opportunity. Unlike the VA hearing, this hearing will allow the RMJM HIllier plan for rehabbing Charity to become the centerpiece of the discussion. Plus, LSU's total mismanagement of public healthcare will also be spotlighted. The attachment contains an appeal that will be distributed to community meetings to publicize the June 22 hearing. The Committee to Reopen Charity will also do some canvassing in Lower Mid City below and above S. Broad St. We will also reach out to community organizations to come aboard as co-signers of the appeal. The door-to-door canvassing is slated for June 05, the first Saturday in June. But we urge you to spread the appeal, put it up on bulleting boards and email it to others. Its formatted for legal size paper, but letter size will do. --The New Orleans Committee to Reopen Charity
