ABOUT THE NEW ORLEANS KATRINA COMMEMORATION FOUNDATION This organization exists because on Monday, August 29, 2005, the City of New Orleans was almost completely destroyed in one of the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States. Levee Failures and Hurricane Katrina’s destruction killed thousands, uprooted and displaced over one million humans on the Gulf Coast.
WHO ARE WE? The New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation is a local grassroots organization formed to commemorate loved ones lost during Hurricane Katrina and the Great Flood. The 2006 and 2007 marches were hosted by the People's Hurricane Relief Fund (PHRF). In 2007, after the second march, PHRF closed down. In 2008, the New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation was established to continue the march because we believe in our community's health and well being despite our horrific experience.
WHAT DO WE DO? Every August 29th, rain or shine, we host the Annual Katrina Commemoration March/Secondline and the Katrina Commemoration Program at Hunter's Field.
WHY WE MARCH? We march for many reasons. We march to never forget family who died without warning on that Monday. We march to never forget the six days our community was abandoned by the United States government to drown – in the sweltering heat without food and water - in the aftermath of the Great Flood. We march to remember those killed by the police trying to save their families on the Danzinger Bridge, in Algiers and on Poland Avenue.
We march to remember the human cost of the destruction and the reason for the destruction– levee failure. The levees in the lower ninth ward were neglected and the failure of the levees devastated hard working families already struggling with poverty long before the Great Flood. As rebuilding has occurred; the hard work of individuals is not enough without government protection and support.
We march because it is the most peaceful way to acknowledge the complete violence and disrespect for our human rights as American Citizens. We march because New Orleans is our home and no matter how many times our community has been flooded out - we shall not be moved.
WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN? There is a healing ceremony at Jourdan Road and North Galvez at the levee breach in the lower 9th Ward. The healing ceremony is an opportunity for our spiritual community to share words of hope, remembrance and inspiration. Immediately following the healing ceremony, the Katrina Commemoration march/secondline starts. The march/secondline is a combination of traditional New Orleans secondlining, African drummers, New Orleans brass bands, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, various community organizations and the community-at-large. It travels through the streets of New Orleans down North Claiborne Avenue for about 3 miles to St. Bernard Avenue. The march/secondline ends at Hunter’s Field, located on the corner of North Claiborne Avenue and St. Bernard Avenue.
WHO'S GONNA BE THERE? Programming includes many local musicians, hiphop artists, community speakers and spoken word artists. The program addresses the never-to-be diminished profound impact of Katrina, the future of New Orleans and how we are sustaining ourselves in this post Katrina reality.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO MARCHING WITH YOU ON SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010!! To cover the cost of the march we raise money with fundraisers, in-kind and community donations. We plan to continue the march forever. We march to ingrain in our community, that while we may want to forget Katrina, we cannot because we believe in a brighter hopeful positive future and we must learn from the past to build for the future. Donations can be made via Chase Bank to the New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation.
