The Latest HANO Scheme Can Be Stopped! HANO AND HUD WANT TO DESTROY IBERVILLE, NOT REDEVELOP IT!
The Housing Authority of New Orleans and the Downtown Development District are pursuing a new scheme to destroy the Iberville Development and scatter its residents to the winds. The name of the latest scheme to destroy Iberville is Choice Neighborhoods. HANO and supporters of Neighborhood Choice will try to lull Iberville residents into a false sense of security by promising folks in the neighborhood that redevelopment won’t be allowed to compromise their housing needs. Nothing could be further from the truth. Neighborhood Choice in practice amounts to the same type of “redevelopment” that HANO forced on the Big Four developments following Katrina. Recent history shows us that schemes by HANO to destroy Iberville can be stopped. A fight back of residents and community supporters, working together through the organization C3/ Hands Off Iberville, in 2004 and early 2005 stopped a push by HANO to secure federal funding for the mass demolition of Iberville. And in the Fall of 2005 a struggle bringing together residents and community supporters, again with the organizational support of C3/Hands Off Iberville, forced the U.S. Government, over the objections of Mayor Nagin and the New Orleans City Council, to reopen Iberville in January 2005 following Katrina. Now, in 2010, a similar battle must be fought to save Iberville from the wrecking ball.
SPEAKOUT ON NEW PLAN TO DESTROY IBERVILLE 5:30PM WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2010. IBERVILLE BASIN COURT, BASIN STREET.
