While Iraq dominated headlines during 2004, Afghanistan was largely forgotten by the world media. Carmela Baranowska was the first independent reporter to travel into South Central Afghanistan behind US military and Taliban lines. The story of what she discovered is documented in the 45-minute documentary film “Taliban Country.” Initially embedded with US Marines in Central Afghanistan, she followed them on the cordon and knock operations as well as the US Army's "hearts and minds campaign.” In the process she discovered that the US allies, Governor Jan Mohammed and his local militia, were terrorizing the population. Returning to the area independently she also exposed the fact that US Marines were brutalizing the local community into compliance. As a result of this film, the US Army and Marine Corps both announced inquiries into these abuses.
