About the Editorial Group
The New Orleans Indymedia Editorial Group is responsible for deciding what articles published on the newswire to feature in the center column of the home page. The Editorial Group, like the rest of the NOLA IMC, consists entirely of volunteers who support the mission of the NOLA IMC.

Like the rest of the NOLA IMC, decisions made within the Editorial Group are done by modified consensus. Consensus is strived for in all decisions, with 2/3 majority rule an extreme case last resort if consensus cannot be reached.

Other process details: 3 members constitute a quorum; everybody must attend two meetings before they can vote on official NOLA IMC issues. Editors are scheduled weekly; anybody who is not scheduled for a month is not considered an active editor and thus has their log-in suspended.

Most day-to-day decisions are made by individuals who follow the editorial policy consented to by the entire group. For example, any member of the editorial group can decide to feature a post on the center column of the home page without further input from other members of the group. Any decision can be challenged by other members of the group, and the editorial policy is always up for debate and further change as the future growth of NOLA Indymedia warrants.

The Editorial Group has consented upon the editorial policy below and uses it to guide decisions about what articles to feature in the center column of the home page.

New Orleans Indymedia Editorial Policies
Center of Front Page Editorial Management
New Orleans Indymedia will feature no story or announcement on the front page that contains material that is hateful toward any racial, ethnic, religious, gender or sexual orientation group. If the material is directed toward an institution (e.g. a government or a church) or an individual, this regulation does not apply.

  1. Articles will only be featured if they are timely and 1) locally relevant or 2) written locally or by an inhabitant of our local area, i.e. Louisiana and surrounding areas in the rural south.
  2. Articles from corporate media sources will only be put on the center column if 1) they are highly relevant and 2) local IMC coverage was unavailable for the event.
Content managers may pull anything from the front page. They must email the editorial list when they do so.

Newswire Editorial Management
The editorial group will hide any post to the newswire that is either:
  1. an obvious for profit advertisement
  2. a repeated post (duplicate of another post on our newsire)
  3. an obvious test post
Hidden articles can be viewed by clicking View Hidden Posts, which is always available at the bottom of the newswire on the home page.

The editorial group will err on the side of not hiding articles. The group also will err on the side of including articles in the 'global' or 'local' categories versus 'other'. Any editor can move any article, using their best judgment and interpretation of our mission statement and principles of unity.

In general, editors will move articles to 'local' that correspond with our center front page editorial ideals and include both news and opinion articles. Articles are typically moved to 'global' if they are deemed to be globally relevant. Articles are left in 'other' if they do not merit hiding but are deemed for whatever reason to not merit moving to 'global' or 'local'.

Any editor that hides an article will post a notice to the editorial email list. Any editor may undo the move of another editor and will email the list that they have done so. It is suggested that the content manager considering undoing another editor's judgment contact that person first.

No article will be deleted by the editorial group. Editors may move articles they publish to 'local' or 'global'.

In an effort to be as transparent as possible in our decision-making, the editorial email list archive can be viewed by anybody. To view the list or signup and/or post to the list, go to http://lists.indymedia.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/imc-neworleans

Open Publishing
The New Orleans Indymedia newswire works on the principle of Open Publishing, an essential element of the global Indymedia project that allows anyone to self-publish their work on a globally accessible web site.

People are encouraged to "become the media"--to use their own skills and abilities of observation, writing, and creativity in posting text, analysis, videos, audio clips, photos and artwork directly to the website. You can publish to the newswire by clicking the Publish link on the top of every page. The post is then viewable at the top of the newswire, and will move down the list as more people post news.

The use of, and belief in, Open Publishing rests on several central assumptions:
  • People who post to the newswire will present their information in a thorough, honest, and accurate manner.
  • Readers are intelligent and aware, skeptical and inquisitive of the posts they view and are able to distinguish for themselves what is content of value and what is not.
  • The means to an end is as important as the end itself.

Notes
This document, as are all NOLA IMC policies, is constantly up for review and debate. The editorial group invites suggestions, comments, criticisms and ideas to improve this editorial policy.
