STOP THE ILLEGAL REMOVAL OF PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS FROM NEW ORLEANS
by new orleans housing
Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at 11:05 AM
forestparkresist@gmail.com
As public housing residents and supporters in the New Orleans area, we demand that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) and landlords stop using alleged hurricane damage to public housing projects as a pretext for cutting off section 8 payments to its residents. Our association knows full well that the agencies in charge of these housing complexes are using allegations of storm damage to the complexes as a pretext for expelling working class African-Americans, in a very blatant attempt to coopt our homes and sell them to developers to build high-priced housing. In this way, they are taking HUD secretary Alfonso Jackson's statement that this disaster will result in a "whiter New Orleans" and turning it into a reality, and we say no to this ethnic cleansing.

We ask that HUD support the residents of Forest Park, Tanglewood Apartments, Walnut Square, Christopher Projects, Fisher Projects, Jackson Landing, Iberville Project and all other Section 8 or publicly-funded housing in the New Orleans area in our just quest for maintaining our existing leases and upholding the conditions of our leases as listed below:
1. Any tenant whose place of residence is still legally inhabitable under the building codes must be allowed to stay. We demand that the management of these projects and HUD respect Governor Kathleen Blanco's decree banning evictions because of the disaster. 2. Every tenant be accorded the right to return to his or her apartment within ninety days. Each tenant must be notified in person when his or her apartment becomes ready for reoccupation. 3. There shall be no raise in the rent upon reoccupation. 4. Any new lease contracts upon reentry of our apartments must not incorporate new restrictions on tenants terms of occupancy such as restrictions on childrens or pets, etc. 5. Management must assist tenants in finding alternative temporary housing during the interim period while tenants housing is being renovated, so that tenants may move back into their home as expediently as possible.
We trust the management will respect the right of the vast majority of tenants whose apartments are inhabitable to remain in their homes.
Respectfully submitted,
Charlestine Jones Spokesperson of the Forest Park Tenants Association (504) 362-2833

Housing legal advice
by Tenants rights

Tenants always get treated like second class citizens. Even some public housing agencies act like capitalist landlords when they push tenants around and try to take away their rights. You need to take a group class action legal case against them. If you are on a low income, or someone in your group has special needs they may be able to get legal aid on behalf of the group. Group actions are usually stronger.

Here's an idea!

Here's an idea! Stop living off my tax dollars and earn your own! Get a job and pay your own bills!
THIS WILL OFFEND MANY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT DESERVE IT AND I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE, EMPLOYED, UPSTANDING CITIZENS. PLEASE DO NOT THINK THIS IS ADDRESSED TO YOU.
Now for the rest of you. GET A JOB!! Stop having babies you can't afford. If you people don't respect you, it is because you have not earned it. Who could respect someone who mooches off of them and won't take responsibility for their own livelihood or their own actions. No one, that's who. The projects were not built to house people who will not work. They were established as transitional housing for veterans returning from war. People who earned respect. Do you see them still living there? Hell no! So why have families been there for three generations with no intention of getting out? Because they are lazy. Too many people are born into poverty, abuse and neglect, yet overcome it. They stay away from crime and drugs, get jobs, save money and buy their own homes. No healthy person has any right to demand or expect free housing or any other welfare handouts. Employers are desperate to hire people at record pay rates. Stop being useless and wasting my tax dollars, I have my own kids to house, clothe, feed and educate.
The Cycle Must Be Broken

It appears that alot of work needs to take place in the State of Louisiana. I have continued to follow news stories on the clean-up progress in the State of Louisiana and would like for Ray Nagin and Governor Blanco to make it feasible for their citizens to return to New Orleans and the State of Louisiana immediately. I currently live in a community where several families from New Orleans have relocated. My experiences with your citizens living in my community have not been pleasant ones! I have endured disrespectful children with fowl mouths, adults loitering on the corners and bringing my property value down, persons parking their cars on manicured lawns, barbecuing and having parties accompanied with loud music in the front of homes even though there is a patio, debris, unsanitary conditions, and a overall attitude as if they live in a ghetto or slum environment. I am irate because I pay my tax dollars; not to be displaced from my home or be mistreated by someone who gets a subsidy when they should be thankful that they have a roof over their head. When can your citizens come home? I will support that effort. If you send the tractor trailers to pick them up, I'll spread the word around. I am tired of the vandalism, robberies, violence, and drug activity that they have brought to my community. It would be different if they truly had a sense of what it is to live in an environment where people work two jobs to make ends meet, and put forth the effort to pick up paper, cut the grass, and maintain cleanliness. I am not against anyone trying to survive, but when you come to Rome you should do as the Romans Do! That is my expectation, and my neighbors agree.

I am from New Orleans, and I am back in New Orleans now. I have several issues with what is going on now. 1. If people want to return they have every right to do so. There is NO One preventing people from returning. Black, White, Latino, Vietnamese… you get my meaning… all are welcome. If your are black and you think that you are not welcome in New Orleans, you are wrong. Come back, what is stopping you?
One warning though… it is not easy. There is no free ride for anyone, not even rich folks. There is work to be done. No one can just waltz into ready-made housing now. Even if you have a million $$ to spend on a house, you will only get one that needs a tremendous amount of work.
2. On a positive note… there are plenty of jobs to go around in New Orleans. Some companies are even helping to fined housing. There is no reason for someone to be jobless, especially the unskilled. The skilled have opportunities as well; we especially need police officers and medical personnel.
3. What really gets to me as a black person…. Is the wholesale backstabbing of poor blacks by so called “community activists” including so called black “leaders”.
What person in their “right” mind would agree to warehousing blacks in poorly constructed, poorly designed, crime and blight ridden areas? Black “leaders” need to be honest with themselves… who benefits from stocktaking black folks in horrendous public housing? Certainly, the public housing residents do not.
Public housing is not the resident’s private property. It is public land and should be used to promote public works for the betterment of the ENTIRE community.
Just as I would be promptly put in jail if I decided to commandeer a public transportation vehicle for my own personal use… former housing residents should not insist on commandeering public property for his or her own personal use.
Further, these public housing units are not fit for human habitation. I would not allow my dog to live in those conditions. Leaders (including this publication) should be ashamed of themselves if they choose to perpetuate the type of lifestyle these developments promote. They are soul-killing monstrosities of urban development.
Now is the time for new thinking and fresh ideas regarding public housing.

I think that public housing should be reopened, but on the following conditions. 1.) Rresidents that lived there before will have to clean up their former apartments, and also maintain a full time job. 2.) No renting of apartments to unemployed people, if you don't have a job, get one. We tax payers, pay for your upkeep. 3.) The city needs childcare centers for the children of working parents, open up one in the Community Center of the housing project, everyone can work. 4.) Take care of your place, its where you live, don't dump garbage around, thats why they have dumpsters. 5.) Plant flowers and shrubs around your aparment, makes it look nice and you will also enjoy the experience 6.) Start a community garden and get all involved, keeps people busy and the bounty will be great. Children learn from this experience and we adults do too. Learn the joy of canning, you'd be suprised on how good, your homemade things will taste. Saves money, too. 7.) Teach your children about the good things in life and teach them well, make sure that they have the best education that they can get, just because the school, doesn't have books, buy some, weither they are new or used, everyone can learn from books. 8.) Let's make sure our children learn not to make the mistakes, we parents have. Teach them respect, kindness and caring, teach them to work and to learn to love whatever there is do in life, teach them that living is a gift and not something that should be taken for granted.
