Protesters were calling for the reopening of all public housing units in New Orleans and urging support of HR1227, a bill that would help ease the urgent housing crisis in New Orleans. HANO police were present to insure no one was admitted to the event without an invitation, as were NOPD and National Guard.

Protesters got as close to the event as possible. When harrassed by police to leave and not "obstruct" the road, they received permission from the owner of the nearby FEMA trailer to stand on her property next to the fence.

Unable to ignore the protests, HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson goes to the fence and gets and earful from Sharon, a public housing resident and housing rights activist.
