Locked-out public housing residents and housing rights advocates took part in a spirited rally outside the invitation-only press event with HUD's Alphonso Jackson.

Protesters were calling for the reopening of all public housing units in New Orleans and urging support of HR1227, a bill that would help ease the urgent housing crisis in New Orleans. HANO police were present to insure no one was admitted to the event without an invitation, as were NOPD and National Guard.

Protesters got as close to the event as possible. When harrassed by police to leave and not "obstruct" the road, they received permission from the owner of the nearby FEMA trailer to stand on her property next to the fence.

Many members of the press attempted to approach the fence to get the protesters' point of view, but were stopped by HANO police.
