Community Center to distribute free cookware to low income residents.

The Community Center of St. Bernard, 1107 LeBeau St, Arabi, is pleased to announce that it has received a large donation of cookware and dishes from the Louisiana Recovery Authority. These items are part of the $85 million in FEMA supplies that were originally intended for the Gulf Coast Katrina recovery, but which were stored in warehouses in Texas for 2 years before finally being returned to Louisiana in June 2008.

The Community Center will be disbursing these items through its Mustard Seed Distribution Program, which regularly provides food, clothing, and household items to low-income residents. Program participants will be able to choose either one box of cookware or one box of dishes. Each box of cookware includes a 1 qt covered saucepan, a 2 qt covered saucepan, a 4 qt covered stockpot, and a 10” sauté pan. Each box of dishes includes a 16 piece set of Corelle dinnerware and a 12 piece flatware set.

Anyone who wishes to receive these items must be registered with the Community Center’s Mustard Seed Distribution Program and must have current documentation on file with the program. The program requires proof of residency, proof of identification and proof of income for each participant. More details are available at http://www.ccstb.org/images/mustardseed.pdf .

Anyone whose documentation is incomplete will not be eligible to receive these supplies. Clients will be able to register for the program or provide missing documentation during the regular Community Center hours, Monday-Friday from 10 AM-5 PM. “The Community Center is very pleased to have received this donation, and we will move to quickly get these supplies into the hands of those who truly need them," stated Mustard Seed Distribution Coordinator Jason Horwitz.

The distribution of the kitchenware will begin on Friday, September 19, at 11 AM, and will continue until all of the items have been disbursed. For further information about the cookware distribution, please phone Coordinator Jason Horwitz at 504-281-2512 during normal office hours.
