Sen. Barack Obama campaigned for the presidency in 2008, as the “hope and change” candidate on domestic as well as foreign policy issues. After years of growing disenchantment and opposition to President George W. Bush’s bellicose and militaristic policies abroad – including the invasion of Iraq based on false allegations – many Americans were ready for our government to take a new approach in dealing with the rest of the world.
